The world of technology is moving at lighting speed.  We are experiencing advances in software capabilities, interactions with automated services, and a far greater emphasis on how we are becoming more reliant on digital processes in our everyday lives.  Case in point, when was the last time you were able to actually talk to a human without having to go through a gauntlet of virtual assistant’s questions just to get simple answers to your phone bill?

The same advances are seen in the healthcare arena.  Troy Tazbaz, Director of the Digital Health Center of Excellence at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) announced the advent of New Digital Health Advisory Committee.  The committee was developed to dig deeper into the highly complex area of digital health technologies (DHTs).  DHTs include a multitude of products involving artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) and virtual/and augmented reality to digital therapies and wearables.  With science and technology surging forward with new and improved innovations, it is imperative to ensure safe and effective regulations surrounding their usage.  The committee welcomes and requests subject matter experts from all areas to provide their views from a scientific and technical perspective to ensure consideration of all risks, benefits, and clinical results.  The committee will provide these views to the Commissioner of Food and Drugs to openly collaborate on the potential issues or consequences that could result from proposed or established FDA policy or regulation related to DHTs.
